Workplace alcohol use and impairment affect an estimated 15% of U.S. workers, or 19.2 million Americans. The annual cost to US business is estimated in the billions of dollars annually.
Businesses today invariably take a zero tolerance approach to alcohol in the workplace. Those suspected of violating their company's alcohol and drug policy may be asked to submit to a breathalyzer test on the job or at an outside clinic or face immediate disciplinary action up to and including termination.
What many workers do not realize is that after a night of heavy partying their alcohol blood content may still be over the legal limit for driving and also in violation of their employer’s alcohol policy by the time they report to work in the morning.
